Importance of Tree Removal and Tree Trimming/Pruning

Essential Guide to Tree Removal and Pruning: Why It Matters

Tree removal and tree trimming/pruning are not just about keeping your property looking good; they are essential services for maintaining the safety and health of your environment.

Reasons for Tree Removal:

  • Disease: Trees can become infected with diseases that not only affect their health but can also spread to other trees and plants in the surrounding area. Removing a diseased tree is often necessary to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Damage: Sometimes, trees can become damaged due to storms, lightning, or other external factors. A damaged tree can become unstable and pose a significant risk of falling, causing injury or damage to property.
  • Safety Concerns: Trees that have grown too close to buildings, power lines, or other structures can pose a significant safety hazard. In such cases, tree removal is often the safest and most practical solution.

Benefits of Tree Trimming/Pruning:

  • Maintaining Tree Health: Regular trimming and pruning help to remove dead or diseased branches, promoting the growth of healthy new branches and leaves.
  • Enhancing Landscape Aesthetics: Well-maintained trees enhance the beauty of your landscape. Trimming and pruning help to shape the trees, remove unsightly branches, and encourage healthy growth.
  • Preventing Potential Hazards: Overgrown branches can obstruct views, interfere with power lines, or pose a risk of falling during storms. Regular trimming and pruning help to prevent these potential hazards.

Tree removal and tree trimming/pruning are essential services for maintaining the safety, health, and aesthetics of your property. Whether you need to remove a diseased or damaged tree or trim and prune your trees to maintain their health and beauty, it is always advisable to seek the services of a professional tree service company.

Criteria for Selecting the Best Tree Services

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Top-Notch Tree Services

Selecting a tree service company is a crucial decision that should not be taken lightly. It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about getting it done right, safely, and at a fair price. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting the best tree services:

  • Experience:
    • An experienced company will have the knowledge and skills necessary to handle any situation. Look for a company with several years of experience in the tree service industry.
  • Certification (SEE NOTE BELOW):
    • Certified arborists have received specialized training in tree care and maintenance. Ensure that the company you choose has certified arborists on staff.
  • Insurance:
    • Tree removal and trimming can be dangerous work. Make sure the company you choose is fully insured to protect yourself from any liability in case of accidents or damages.
  • Equipment:
    • The right equipment is essential for safely and efficiently performing tree services. Ensure that the company you choose has the necessary equipment for the job.
  • Customer Reviews:
    • Check online reviews and ask for references from past customers. A company with positive reviews and satisfied customers is likely to provide excellent service.
  • Pricing:
    • Get a detailed estimate before the work begins. Make sure it includes all the services you need and any additional costs that may arise. Be wary of companies that offer significantly lower prices than others; it may be a sign of inferior quality or lack of proper insurance and certifications.

Remember, the cheapest option is not always the best option. It’s essential to consider all these factors to select the best tree service company for your needs.

Every business that provides tree care services for hire in New Jersey must register biennially with the Board as a condition of doing business in the state. This requirement applies to businesses located outside New Jersey that perform tree care services within the state.

This licensing program and business registration enable the Board to identify and communicate directly with all companies doing tree care work within the state. It also provides opportunities for worker safety information and materials to be disseminated. The training requirement ensures that employees receive regular safety instruction, reducing injuries and fatalities among tree care workers.

On April 17, 2017, the rules of the Tree Expert and Tree Care Operators Licensing Law were adopted and promulgated. With the adoption of these rules, every business providing tree care services within the state must register with the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts and provide the required documentation within 60 days, or by June 16, 2017.

Businesses based in New Jersey or providing services within the state must:

  1. Register with the Board using the Board’s Business Registration Application.
  2. Employ at least one licensed individual full time.
  3. Maintain a minimum of $1,000,000 in general liability insurance or a letter of credit in the same amount issued by a bank or lending institution to do business in New Jersey.
  4. Secure and maintain worker’s compensation insurance coverage for its employees or be approved for self-insurance by the New Jersey Compensation Rating and Inspection Bureau. The worker’s compensation insurance shall be based on the applicable New Jersey Compensation Rating and Inspection Bureau code.
  5. Abide by adopted industry standards: ANSI A300 American National Standard for Tree Care Operations – Tree, Shrubs, and Other Woody Plant Management, including Part 1 through Part 10, ANSI Z60.1 American Standard for Nursery Stock, ANZI Z133 Safety Standards for Arboriculture Operations, OSHA, Federal Motor Coach Safety, and FHA regulation set forth in Z133 and each of the Best Management Practices published by the ISA.
  6. Abide by the Canons of Professional Ethics and Standards of Conduct for Businesses.
  7. Provide training to their employees in the safe operation of equipment and the maintenance of a safe work area regularly and submit proof of training to the Board. Within 90 days of registering the business with the Board, a business must develop and establish a written comprehensive safety policy.
  8. Submit a Model Tree Safety Training Checklist Form and the Safety Training Attendance Form by January 31st of each year to the Board to document the annual employee training requirement.
  9. A Registered Business shall keep records for at least four years and shall keep safety training for each employee for at least as long as the individual is employed.
  10. All records and information required to be kept by the New Jersey Board of Tree Experts shall be provided to the Board within 10 days of the Board’s written request.

It is generally recommended to have your trees trimmed or pruned every 3-5 years. However, the frequency may vary depending on the type and health of the tree. It’s best to consult a professional tree service company for personalized advice.

Most professional tree service companies will remove and dispose of the debris after tree removal or trimming. However, it’s always best to confirm this with the company before hiring them.

Some signs that a tree may need to be removed include:

  • The tree is dead or dying.
  • The tree is leaning dangerously.
